There is a great deal of talk about the potential benefits of mobile technology for learning but still relatively little is known about its impact on second language acquisition. In this presentation I will report on a recent study into the use of audiobooks on mobile phones for the practice of extensive listening skills. Specifically I investigated the effects of aural input enhancement (the directing of learners’ attention to a specific linguistic form in an otherwise meaning-oriented context) on participants’ acquisition of the English passive structure. I will discuss some of the key findings and implications of this study.

Dr. Hayo Reinders (www.innovationinteaching.org) is TESOL Professor and Director of the doctoral program at Anaheim University in the United States and visiting professor at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand. He is also Editor-in-Chief of Innovation in Language Learning and Teaching. Hayo’s interests are in technology in education, learner autonomy, and out-of-class learning and he is a speaker on these subjects for the Royal Society of New Zealand. His most recent books are on teacher autonomy, teaching methodologies, and second language acquisition and he edits a book series on ‘New Language Learning and Teaching Environments’ for Palgrave Macmillan.
