Berni Wall: Developing Online Solutions for IELTS Training

IELTS features in many English language students’ lives nowadays. Whether they need to apply for university degrees, emigrate to English speaking countries or obtain work visas, many English language students are required to produce IELTS results as proof of their English language ability. As the spread of IELTS students is really global, online solutions are a perfect choice for many IELTS candidates. In this short presentation I want to illustrate the tools that I include in the online courses that I have developed over the past 3 to 4 years which are proving successful in helping IELTS students gain the bands that they want.

Berni Wall has been an English language teacher, teacher trainer, examiner and mentor since 1977. She has taught University, Further and Higher Education, as well as 6 years of Primary school. She has also worked as a teacher trainer and as an English Language Examiner. After studying for an MBA in 1989/90 Berni set up her own English language training business delivering corporate language training for large multinationals, SMEs and government agencies. She moved online and launched her training website Gapfillers (www.gapfillers.com) in 2006 to help fill language gaps and bridge the gap between lessons for corporate clients. Gapfillers also offers teacher-supported intensive training programmes in English for work and IELTS. She is currently other developing online programmes aimed at IELTS students who require bands 7 and 8 (such as the IELTS Writing Boot Camp) and will shortly be launching a new website ‘IELTS Learning Tips’ devoted to this. Berni’s offline work centres around intensive, immersion programmes (1&2 weeks) in Yorkshire (Fleetham Lodge) for small groups of adult, professional students. These programmes also include CPD workshops for English language teachers. She is a veteran ELTON nominee having been nominated no less than 3 times, for Gapfillers, Virtual Round Table and Eltchat!
